
Guide to Writing Your Own Wedding Vows
It can be an overwhelming task sitting down to write personalised vows. I mean, How do you sum up your love for that special someone in a paragraph or two. Read through these tips, tricks and a simple format to get started!
Firstly.
THOUGHTS ONTO PAPER. Take a moment to sit with a note pad and pen
(Laptop might be easier) and jot down any little thoughts or feelings that comes to mind about your other half, your relationship or future marriage. Highlight your favourites and we will revisit them further down the page. Let's move onto the Format of your vows.
What's next.
SET THE SCENE. What does that mean Nat? Express your excitement, surprise, current emotions about being right there on your wedding day with your fiancé. It's traditional to use the fiancé's full name to begin.
Examples -
Annie Smith, I never Believed I'd be here in front of you asking you to be my wife, but here we 10 years later after I asked you to be my girlfriend in high school.
Jordan Jones, I knew you would become my Husband the second we met at ....
Right now, Megan, standing here next to you, is precisely where I'm supposed to be.
And Then.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THEM. You want to express what you value most in your partner. Look back at your notes from step one. Other ideas -
Your partner's qualities that you adore. How do they motivate you.
What are your favourite features.
What do you appreciate the most.
How do they make you a better person.
Follow with.
YOUR RELATIONSHIP - What you love!
focus on the gratitude you have for your fiancé and your relationship. What make your connection unique. Look back at your notes again for inspiration.
Step four.
PROMISES. 3-4 promises is the sweet spot. Include humour/ sentiment/ honesty.
Examples-
I guarantee to chuckle at your humour, even when you're not funny.
I pledge to always be devoted, respectful and courteous.
I'll nurse you back to health when you're ill and cheer you up when you're
down..
I will treat your boy as my own and give him the best possible upbringing.
I promise to never watch an episode on NETFLIX without you.
Moving onto.
VISION FOR MARRIAGE. In this part of the template, you can describe your hopes and plans for the future of your marriage.
Lastly.
WITH LOVE. End your vows with a line of love. Examples -
To the love of my life, the person I will spend the rest of my life with. I promise never to stop loving you.
You're the one constant in my life, the person I can always count on. To the moon and back, my love.
I will always be the one for you.
Dont over think this part. A simple "I LOVE YOU" works perfectly also.
Other tips & Tricks
❤︎ It can be handy to write up to three drafts and pick which one feels best.
❤︎ Start writing at least 3 weeks before the ceremony.
❤︎ Your wedding vows shouldn't go beyond one minute.
❤︎ Write in your voice. You're not Shakespeare...don't try to be!
❤︎ Seek inspiration - Pinterest, google, Youtube!! Pop on a song that is sentimental to you both.
❤︎ Decide the right mix - Sentiment/ Humour. Speak to your fiancé and agree on the vibe. Even if you’re keeping them a surprise.
❤︎ Get comfortable with sentiment. This isn't the time to worry about being too cheesy or too corny. Speak from the heart and you can't go wrong.
❤︎ Read them aloud... Practice and get comfortable with the words.
